James South retired from the New Jersey State Police on February 11, 2011, after a successful and decorated 25 year career. During his career, James acquired extensive experience and training in the field of criminal investigations. His assignments to various New Jersey State Police road stations, as a supervisory member of the Criminal Investigation Office, and as a supervisor within the Office of Professional Standards expanded his experience and knowledge base in conducting a variety of investigations, in interview and interrogation techniques, and in providing courtroom testimony on the municipal, state and federal levels. The abilities acquired in the performance of these duties led to his assignment as a supervisory member of the Shooting Response Team, a task force formed to address gun-related crime in the City of Camden, one of the country’s most violent cities. This task force concentrated on rapid response to active shootings, quick identification and location of potential witnesses, and confiscation of illegal firearms.

While a member of the New Jersey State Police, and afterwards working in the private sector, Mr. South has lectured on topics including Situational Awareness, Active Assailant in the Workplace, Investigation of gang-related and drug-related shootings and conducting Internal/Administrative Investigations.

In 2011, James formed South and Associates, LLC where he continues to utilize his 25 years of training and experience in the investigative field to benefit his clients in the public and private sector. The South and Associates list of clients includes Fortune 100 corporations, governmental agencies, universities, houses of worship, law firms, high net worth individuals, privately held global asset managers, pharmaceutical companies, critical infrastructure sites, and supply chain logistics and 3PL companies. He holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration and has completed the Texas A&M Engineering Infrastructure Disaster Management and Infrastructure Protection certificate programs. He believes that continuing education coupled with extensive experience is the cornerstone of a successful Investigative, Intelligence, Research and Consulting firm. Due to his expertise and continuing education in the field of investigation, James has been heavily involved in supply chain theft as well as theft from warehouses and 3PL’s. This includes the theft of tractor trailer loads of product across the United States. James has been utilized by logistics Insurance companies to conduct physical security assessments of laydown yards and or secure yards.

James is a member of the ASIS International association South East Chapter, a member of the Pharmaceutical Cargo Security Coalition (PCSC), a member and Board of Director of INTELLENET,  a member of the Midwest Cargo Security Council and a member of the World Association of Detectives (WAD) and a member of the Council of International Investigators (CII).

In 2019, at the request of clients, he and his business partner formed the Garrison Security Group, LLC to provide trusted security solutions to their extensive list of clientele.

James holds a bachelor's degree in Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickenson University.

James has extensive training in the protection of critical infrastructure and disaster management.
